I got to see On Stranger Tides last Friday – first impressions? I loved it!
I goes without saying that Johnny Depp played Captain Jack Sparrow brilliantly for a fourth time. I also particularly enjoyed watching Blackbeard, played by Ian McShane, and Anglelica, Blackbeard’s Daughter, who was played by Penélope Cruz.
The film begins in London, where an imposter using the name Jack Sparrow is putting together a crew to set sail in search of the Fountain of Youth. Most of the filming in London was located in Greenwich, and the Naval College and Painted Hall feature heavily in the first 20 minutes of the film.
Of course, the pirates don’t stay on dry land for too long, and soon we’re back to sailing the seven seas, dramatic sword fighting stunts, and mermaids. The main plot evolved around Blackbeard’s attempts to find the Fountain of Youth, as it has been prophesied that Blackbeard only has two weeks to live.
I personally enjoyed On Stranger Tides far more than At World’s End. The storyline is much simpler to follow, and there are many humourous scenes between Depp and Cruz – the history between the two characters catches up with Captain Jack Sparrow with hilarious one-liners. Moreover, the film ends leaving room for a sequel (I wonder why Disney wants to make a FIFTH film of one of the most profitable film franchises ever?) which means we can look forward to more of Captain Jack Sparrow, and maybe even Jack the Monkey will make a return.
